Black History Month Reading Challenge

January 19-February 28, 2026

One Dozen Who Care, Inc in collaboration with Nantahala Regional Library is hosting their 6th annual reading challenge for children in kindergarten through 12th grade from January 19th until February 28th. This event promotes picture books, biographies, novels, and history books in the Purel Miller African American Book Collection. Named for a beloved former Andrews resident, the Collection encourages greater cultural understanding and is currently housed at Andrews Public Library. Children are asked to read and review age-appropriate books in the Miller Collection. Younger children (K-4th grade) should read their books with or to an adult older than eighteen. Older children (5th-12th grades) should discuss what they’re reading with an adult. For each review, the children will receive $5 with a maximum of $20 awarded per child. Book lists and review forms can be found on the library’s website here: https://www.nrlibrary.org/pmc. Reviews must be submitted no later than Saturday, February 28th to the following email address: pmcreadingchallenge@gmail.com. Incentives will be awarded in March. For more information about the reading challenge, contact Bridget at 828-837-2025 or Janell at 305-467-3478.
